Adventures of the charmingly odd

Hey Guys! Wear Some Damn Sunscreen!

After a couple of years working in animal hospitals both in New York City and in New Jersey, this past January I knew I needed a career change. Ultimately I want to write novels for a living so I don’t mind doing any odd job as long as it makes me happy and it pays the bills. But seeing sick and dying animals every single day was destroying my mental health. No matter how happy seeing puppies and kittens every day made me, the memories of families or elderly couples putting down their beloved pets haunted me- and will continue to do so for the rest of my life.

And so I sent out resumes to any and all office jobs with my salary and commuting requirements. Now who would have thought I would end up office manager to at a laser medical spa? I didn’t take care of my skin, wear any make up, or use hair spray until college for crying out loud. For the past two years I wore scrubs, chuck taylors, and my hair up in a messy ponytail to work. Suddenly I had to wear full makeup everyday and look as presentable as humanly possible.

A major part of my job is helping people with skincare and helping (mainly) women deal with the effects of aging. Now, I fully believe in just letting yourself get old. Age with grace! Face lifts and plastic surgery can make you look so fake afterwards and ruin your natural beauty. I adore Meg Ryan but have you seen her lately? Women go through so much to fight the battle of looking older and no matter how many laser treatments or expensive products you buy, there’s only so much you can do to undo the damage.

So listen up ladies. And men too- because skin cancer is no joke. PUT ON SOME DAMN SUNSCREEN ALREADY.

The most important thing I’ve learned from my job is that sun damage is the #1 reason why your skin gets fucked up-at any age. Want to prevent wrinkles? Sun spots? Uneven skin tone? Put on the SPF and put it on daily.

Now, I spent most of my adolescence going to Hawai’i in the summertime and being annoyed whenever my mom would make us put on sunscreen. It took forever, it was greasy, and halted my rush to jump into the water. I’ve always known it was better to wear sunscreen but I fully admit that until the age of 25, I have no idea how important it was to wear it.

Since January I made it a point to take really good care of my skin so that I wouldn’t have to wear foundation. I loathe having to put on any kind of foundation because it always feels like a layer of dirt on my face. I don’t care that you see any imperfection, I’m not wearing that nonsense.

These are photos taken two days ago, right after I stepped out of the shower. No make up, no photoshop, no filters. Just my bare, clear skin!

IMG_1723IMG_1722Instead I started doing 3 simple things: wash my face and apply a toner twice a day, put on a night cream in the evening, and use moisturizer with SPF in it multiple times a day. The products I use are NOT what my job sells and in no way am I getting paid to recommend these products to you. (If you’re curious, my job carries SkinMedica products, which are wonderful, especially for medically treated skin. However, they are a little too expensive for my budget.) I’m simply telling you what I have used for the last 6 months and how they transformed my skin.

Aveeno Smart Essentials Daily Moisturizer with Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF

This lotion is packed with vitamins A, C, & E.  You can get it at any drugs store or Wal-mart for around $10 or from Amazon for $8.83.

Alright, this is my #1 secret power. This Aveeno lotion took me weeks of trying other products with SPF in it before I found this. I did not want to buy a sunscreen. I did not want that greasy, beach smelling liquid all over my face and clogging my pores. And even other drug store lotions claiming to not be greasy WERE greasy and/or not fully absorbed by the skin. And then I found this magic potion.

First and foremost it’s a wonderful moisturizer for the face, neck, and décolletage. It just happens to have SPF 30 in it! It’s 100% affordable and lasts forever. I push this onto every person I talk to about skin care.

Now, obviously you don’t have to buy this product. But for goodness sake, put some SPF on your skin. I’m still on the look out for the perfect body lotion that has SPF in it (again, NOT a sunscreen, but a lotion with SPF). I currently use Eucerin’s Daily Protection Moisturizing Body Lotion SPF 15, that can be found at Ulta for $12. But I want to find something with a stronger SPF. If you have any suggestions, please let me know!

Lancôme Tonique Radiance Clarifying Exfoliating Toner

What it is:
A luxurious balance of science and nature to reveal purified, pampered skin.

What it is formulated to do:
This refreshing exfoliating toner with antioxidant white lotus and clarifying anise extract helps support natural cell turnover to improve skintone, texture, and clarity. It reveals newer, fresher-looking skin.

You can buy it from Sephora for $44.

I’ve never had a lot of trouble with my skin. Even at 26 I’ve still had some minor breakouts but nothing as bad as in high school. Not that my skin was ever bad then either. But after using this Lancôme toner since February, I’ve noticed a HUGE difference in my skin, especially my pores and skin tone. I could scrub the hell out of skin and then take a cotton ball soaked in this toner and it would remove SO MUCH dirt from my face. Dirt or whatever the hell clogs my skin. But I can’t remember the last time a pimple or blackhead would breakout on my face. Same as with the Pro-Activ kits, a toner makes ALL the difference when it comes to skin care.

You can use any brand you want, but I especially like this Lancôme one because its an exfoliator. I used to always have dry skin on my forehead between my eyebrows but now I rarely have dry skin flaking off in the middle of the day. Even if this isn’t in your price-rage, go to Sephora to ask someone for your options. Or watch some videos on YouTube!

You can find it on Amazon or the drugstore for about $15. Now, there’s nothing terribly special about this product in my opinion. I buy this when I have CVS coupons because I feel that an oil based cleanser works the best on removing my eyeliner and leaves my skin feeling fresh. Burt’s Bees products in general are my go to for regular lotion and chapstick. Their hand balm, colored chapsticks, foot cream, and really everything else they sell is wonderful.

So- that’s all I have to say about skin care. Wear SPF on your face. You won’t be sorry. Zoe Signature
